Manila’s high cost of living, endless traffic, and air pollution can really take a toll. It’s easy to feel stuck in a cycle of long hours. Moving to a place like Tuguegarao was like a breath of fresh air.
After spending ten years working in Metro Manila, I made the decision to move back to Tuguegarao. I can honestly say it’s been one of the best choices I’ve ever made, not just for my personal life but also for my career. For years, I’d heard about the idea of working in your own province, but it wasn’t until I made the change that I realized just how transformative it could be.
One of the biggest changes I experienced is the peace and tranquility of living in a smaller city. Back in Metro, I was constantly surrounded by noise, traffic, and the never-ending hustle. Every day felt like a race, and by the time I got home, I was completely mentally and physically drained. Now, the life here feels so much slower, and it’s given me the mental space I never knew I needed. I’ve found that I’m much more focused and productive, and I have time to enjoy the things that matter most which is spending time with family, working on personal projects, and just taking care of myself.
Another benefit has been the cost of living. In Metro, the constant financial pressure was overwhelming. The rent, bills, transportation, and food costs. It often felt like I was working just to get by. But here, everything is so much more affordable. As I have no rent to pay since I have my own house, and everyday expenses don’t take up nearly as much of my paycheck. This has allowed me to save more, invest in things that matter, and even enjoy life without always worrying about my finances. It’s been such a relief to finally have that freedom.
Then there’s the work-life balance. What used to be a major stress was the hours of commuting and train rides. But now, it’s just a 15-minute trike ride from my home to my office. That extra time has allowed me to do more of the things I love, spending time with my kid, or just relaxing after work.
And, of course, I’ve still been able to grow in my career. While Manila is home to some of the biggest companies and networking opportunities, I’ve found that there’s plenty of room to succeed here as well as I step up from senior associate to a managerial role. I’ve had the privilege of working with clients from all over the world, learning new skills, and building my personal brand, all from the comfort of my home province.
At the end of the day, working here in province has given me the balance I always wanted. It’s not just about escaping the chaos in Metro but it’s about finding a pace that fits my life better, one where I can breathe, grow, and truly enjoy every moment.
